"... a French privateer, fitted out at Bordeaux and cruising on the American coast, was wrecked in Buzzard's Bay."

Current situation of my research

My research on the origin of Francis LeBaron in France started with the town of Bordeaux in the Gironde. Indeed its port was very active at the XVIIème century and could be the starting point of Francis LeBaron towards the New World.
But this assumption leading to no track, I then put myself the two following questions:

  • Would not be there other "Bordeaux" in France?

  • In which area can one find the surname "LeBaron"?

At this point I discovered:

  •  The village of "Bordeaux-Saint-Clair" in Normandy

  • That the surname "LeBaron" is very frequent in Normandy.

So I decided to privilege the track of Normandy to carry out my research:

  • First of all, I checked the existence of the town of "Bordeaux" in Normandy by using the "carte de Cassini", established at the XVIIIème century.
The commune of Bordeaux-Saint-Clair was born in 1823 from the fusion from Bordeaux-en-Caux and Saint Clair-sur-Etretat.
The small village of Bordeaux-Saint-Clair is located near Etretat (3km), Fécamp (12km), Le Havre (32km) and Honfleur (47km).

  • Then I went to the Departmental records of Seine Maritime, in Rouen, to seek if there are information relating to the village of "Bordeaux" and a possible family "Lebaron".
By consulting the microfilm of the marital status of Bordeaux-Saint-Clair for the period from 1645 to 1750, I unfortunately discovered that the documents are incomplete and sometimes not easily readable, thus for the year 1668 I found there only the last 2 months of the year (except error of myself).
I however could checked the 2 essential points in my opinion, i.e.:

    1. The parochial registers of the baptisms, marriages and burials comprise well the mention "parish of Bordeaux"

    2. There are families "Baron", " Lebaron", "Lebarron", etc...
My attention was even drawn by a "beautiful signature" at the bottom of the following text (roughly):
<<...1673...January fourth...was baptized Marie Buisson born of this day of the marriage of Louis Buisson and Löuise de Lahays. Her godfather ???Le Baron, her godmother Marie Gattemaille, both of this parish>>
